Research Scientist (APS 6 – EL 1) – Ongoing
Salary: $95,438 – $134,295 per annum
Duties:- Developing and implementing standardised methodologies and workflows for the implementation of long-term ship-based monitoring activities in the Southern Ocean and marine Antarctic environments, including pre-season planning, field campaign design, sampling, and coordination of data pipelines.
- Coordinate the expansion of RSV Nuyina’s science commissioned systems for the monitoring of essential ocean and climate variables, along with calibration and quality control procedures, ensuring the data is made available through the AADC.
- Contributing to marine and ship-based Antarctic and Southern Ocean research projects (AAS or other, e.g. ARC) that focus on data collection for improved management and conservation of these ecosystems.
- Engaging with scientists, technicians, policy officers, environmental managers, operations officers, and other internal and external stakeholders including academic and state and Commonwealth Government agencies, to plan and implement marine and Southern Ocean long-term monitoring activities within EAMP.
- Identifying priority monitoring gaps and reviewing, testing and refining technologies to maximize observing capabilities of the Antarctic marine environment and of the Southern Ocean.
- Providing expert advice for the formulation and implementation of Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Evaluations and Authorisations to key stakeholders in the AAD such as the Environmental Management Unit (EMU) and Antarctic and Environmental Regulation section, to support ship and station operational zone management (including monitoring of mitigation measures) in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
- Communicating key science outcomes to key stakeholders throughout the AAD, through peer-reviewed journal publications, scientific reports for state and Commonwealth governments and to international fora such as the Committee on Environmental Protection of the Antarctic Treaty (ATCM-CEP), Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research and presentations at relevant workshops and conferences.
- Supporting other branch, divisional and departmental priorities, and practicing an inclusive culture of safety, compliance and continuous improvement within Science Branch.
- Participating in Antarctic/Southern Ocean field projects and coordinating teams undertaking Southern Ocean and Antarctic marine research (including with external collaborators).
- The position will be responsible of managing the implementation of the RSV Nuyina Underway Science Program project aimed at maximising the scientific potential of RSV Nuyina as a monitoring platform to provide multidisciplinary observations of essential climate and ocean variables while underway between Australia and Antarctica to underpin all aspects of Antarctic and Southern Ocean research, modelling and forecasting.
